Know the Alphabet before starting school

Part 2 – Hearing the sounds

How often would you ask your child “What does your name start with?” Well this could be your child’s first opportunity to learn the sounds made by the letters of the alphabet!

Many parents wonder – should I teach the capital letters or lower case letters first? (And there are many different schools of thought on this matter…). However, I believe they can be successfully taught together – as it’s very hard to completely shelter your child from one or the other. Letters are all around us! So I simply teach my children and students, “This is the letter A, it makes the a, a, a, sound”.

Once your child has mastered the letters of the alphabet, they naturally begin to identify words and objects that begin with each letter and this is a really crucial step in their journey to learn to read, spell and write.

With the Bright Star Kids Alphabet Poster and FlashCards you can introduce your child to familiar words that begin with each letter. Pictures are carefully integrated into each of the letter stickers, inviting the child to identify what it is and the letter that it starts with. A fantastic extension is to look at the words that are included on the reverse side of the flashcards. Challenge your child by asking them – what else can you think of that starts with this letter? Or, what else can you find around the room that begins with this letter? Find the letter that your name starts with!

When children have a really solid foundation of the sounds of the English language, early reading and writing come so much easier to them as they attempt to sound out words. This is why it’s so important that they know the sounds as well as the names of the letters.

Keep your little one busy with these adorable ABC Flashcards to help with letter recognition. Perfect for toddlers and preschoolers that are learning their alphabet & developing their motor skills. The full version of these flashcards comes with a personalised cover.

Be sure to check out the great range of free printables from the ABC & 123 learning range.
